The English Classics
By Clive Bettison & David Boyd (edited by John Slusar)

Introduction
We all have particular memories of our favourite 'Classic' winners, their owners, jockeys and trainers. What about each of the owner's colours;was it a blue or red cap? How many of us recall the riders of Khalid Abdullah's three Derby winners each wearing a different coloured cap, or Lester donning a white cap on the Queen's first Oaks winner? Or recorded Kahyasi carrying the famous chocolate & green hoops of the present Aga Khan's grandfather? All a fascination to those wondering what the colours of yesteryear were. The modern-day facility of trainers' open days and stable visits give a great insight into their profession. But where were the locations of those classic winning horses of the past? Many of them were stabled at famous centres such as Newmarket, Middleham, Malton, Epsom and Lambourn. But where exactly? Others were in more isolated yards such as Beckhampton, Whatcombe, Manton or the secretive Druids Lodge. Which of the Stoute winners came from Beech Hurst and which from Freemason Lodge? Few know that Cumani's were all stabled, not at Bedford House as expected, but at Kremlin Cottage, and were Hannon's from East Everleigh or Herridge? The object of this work is hopefully to answer the majority of these questions. The result is a culmination of decades of accumulated knowledge and research, including accessing historic racing volumes and newspaper archives. It has been a practice throughout the project to consult as many sources as possible regarding each entry, and certainly not to rely solely on any singular internet record.

Although the primary aim of the work is to look at racing colours and stables where each horse was trained, a secondary aim is to compare the performace of each Classic winner and ask the questions, which of the 5 (sometimes less) Classic winners in any one year were the best of their cohort, and were they superior to the year before or year after? Which horses could rightfully earn the title of 'best of the decade' and the ultimate question, who was the best UK Classic winner of all time?

To enable comparisons to be made, a rating system has been devised called the SR (Standard Rating or Slusar Rating system). The final SR results correlate closely with the Timeform ratings awarded to Classic winners since 1947, but the SR system also provides a rating for each Classic winner since 1776. As a rough guide, a Timeform rating of 110 equates to an SR rating of 1710, while a Timeform rating of 125 equates to an SR rating of 1940, and the current highest rated Classic winner Frankel has a Timeform rating of 147 and an SR rating of 2280.

Ins and Outs
In this very early period, when there were only 11 Derby's and 12 Oaks, all 11 Derby winners made the top 20, while 4 of the Oaks winners missed the top 20 cut, namely Maid of the Oaks in 1783, Trifle in 1785, Hippolyta in 1790, Stella in 1784. The highest rated horse, 1787 Epsom Derby winner Sir Peter Teazle, is placed 85th on the all-time list of Classic winners up to 2022.

SIR PETER TEAZLE (SR 2062)
Sir Peter Teazle, a brown horse by Highflyer out of Papillon, was owned and bred by Edward Smith-Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby in 1784, with high expectations, given that he was by Highflyer, the leading sire for 16 seasons, producing 469 winners, 7 going on to win a Classic. The dam, Papillon, was by Snap, who was also listed in the group of leading sires for 4 seasons. He was sent to be trained at Tarporley by William Saunders and at the age of 3 Sir Peter Teazle was undefeated in the 8 races he contested in 1787, winning the Epsom Derby on his first start, and winning the Prince of Wales Plate at Newmarket for 3-y-old and 4-year-olds. At the age of 4 in 1788 he won 7 out of his 8 starts, his one setback coming in a 500 Guineas Match when failing to concede 35lbs to Dash owned by the Duke of Queensberry. At the age of 5 in 1789 he won an all-age Subscription race at the Craven Stakes meeting at Newmarket, but there were signs that all was not well when he forfeited a 6-mile 1000 Guineas Match, later himself being forfeited a Match against Spark, and then forfeiting again in a 500 Guineas Match against Meteor. He then suffered defeat in his final race when attempting to give 28lbs to Mulberry. He retired to stud where he sired 10 Classic winners, which included 4 Epsom Derby winners, in 1798 Sir Harry (SR 1965), in 1799 Archduke (SR 1966), in 1803 Ditto (SR 1953), in 1806 Paris (SR 1987). He also sired 2 Epsom Oaks winners, in 1794 Hermione (SR 1950) and in 1796 Parisot (SR 1922). In addition, he sired 4 St Leger winners, in 1796 Ambrosio (SR 2008), in 1806 Fyldener (SR 1984), in 1807 Paulina (SR 1893) and in 1808 Petronius (SR 1904).

Ins and outs

Just one Derby winner did not make the top 20 cut, the Colt by Fidget which won the 1797 Derby. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1795 St Leger winner Hambletonian, is placed 6th on the all-time list up to 2022.

HAMBLETONIAN (SR 2232)
Hambletonian, a bay colt by King Fergus out of Grey Highflyer was bred by John Hutchinson of Shipton-by-Beningborough, near York in 1792 and named after the Hambleton Hills in North Yorkshire. He won his first race, a modest 15 guineas Sweepstake, at Hambleton on Tuesday 5th May 1795 when trained by John Hutchinson at Langton Wold, near Malton, and remained unbeaten in his 3-year-old season, culminating in a victory in the St Leger at Doncaster on Tuesday 22nd September 1795. At York races in August 1795 John Hutchinson sold Hambletonian to Sir Charles Turner, of Kirkleatham Hall, alongside Oberon and Beningborough, for a reported 3000 Guineas. In 1796 he raced 4 times, suffering his one and only defeat in a 100 guineas each Sweepstake at York when the 1795 Derby winner Spread Eagle got the better of him. Hambletonian gained his revenge two days later in a Subscription Purse over 4 miles at York, defeating Spread Eagle and Sober Robin. He won back-to-back victories in the 1795 and 1796 Doncaster Cup and Sir Charles Turner sold him, just before his marriage to Theresa Newcomen, to Sir Henry Vane Tempest of Wynyard Park, County Durham. He remained unbeaten in his 7 races in 1797, although he did not race in 1798. In 1799 he won a 3000 Guineas match against Mr Cookson's Diamond by half a neck over the 4-mile Beacon Course at Newmarket, reported to be one of the greatest Matches of the decade, and afterwards his delighted owner commissioned George Stubbs to paint Hambletonian. He also won the Doncaster Stakes for the second time in 1799. In 1800 his only race was the Great Subscription race over 4 miles at York which he won from Dion and Timothy. He retired to stud in 1801 but was not a great success and after his death he was buried in the grounds of Wynyard Park.

Ins and outs
This decade saw 29 Classic winners, as Eleanor won the 1801 Derby and Oaks. Every Derby winner made it onto the top 20, but it was not a strong decade, with Theophania and Ashton, mid-1930s horses, making the cut. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1810 Derby winner Whalebone, is placed 65th on the all-time list up to 2022.

WHALEBONE (SR 2077)
Whalebone, a bay horse by Waxy out of Penelope, was bred in 1807 by the Duke of Grafton at his Euston Hall Stud near Newmarket. His sire Waxy had won the 1793 Derby, while his dam Penelope had beaten 1801 Derby winner Eleanor a number of times, so great things were expected of Whalebone, trained by Robert Robson at Kingston House, Newmarket. He won all but one of his races in 1810, the highlight of which was victory on Thursday 7th June in the Epsom Derby. He experienced some setbacks in 1811, winning 4 and suffering defeat in 4 races. In 1812 he won the prestigious Northampton Gold Cup and a King's Plate at Newmarket, and was sold by the Duke of Grafton to Mr Ladbroke in October 1812. Whalebone added two further King's Plates at Guildford and Lewes in 1813. In 1814 Mr Ladbroke sold Whalebone to George O'Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont and the horse retired to stud at Petworth where he was leading sire in 1826 and 1827, siring Derby winners Lapdog (SR 1915) in 1826 and Spaniel (SR 1998) in 1831. He also sired the 1820 Oaks winner Caroline (SR 1892).

Ins and outs
The inaugural running of the 2000 Guineas, and afterwards, the 1000 Guineas, took place in this decade, so a place in the top 20 was harder to achieve. Every Derby winner made the cut into the top 20 and, for the first time in 1813 a horse won the 2000 Guineas and then went on to land the Derby. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1818 St Leger winner Reveller, is placed 77th on the all-time list up to 2022.

Painting by John Frederick Herring snr (1795-1865) is in the public domain as the artist died more than 70 years ago

Reveller, a bay colt by Comus out of Rosette, was bred by Mr Shard in 1815 and sold as a yearling to Henry Peirse of Bedale who remained his sole owner. His sire Comus finished third in the Epsom Derby, while his dam Rosette was a seven times winner. Reveller, trained by John Lonsdale at Tupgill, near Middleham, began his racing career on Wednesday 19th August 1818 at York, winning the Produce Stakes over 2 miles before tackling the St Leger at Doncaster, which proved to be a fantastic result for his owner, as Reveller won at 4/1 while Henry Peirse's second string Ranter 100/3 finished second. Reveller finished the season winning the Gascoigne Stakes over the St Leger course. In 1819 he won the six-runner Produce Stakes at York on Monday 9th August 1819 and 3 other races that season.  In 1820 he contested 2 Great Subscription races at York, winning the first, but suffering defeat to The Juggler in the second. In 1821 he began his big rivalry with the brilliant northern maestro Dr Syntax, defeating him in the Lancaster Gold Cup, although Dr Syntax got his revenge in the Preston Gold Cup. He then won the 1821 Doncaster Stakes and Lincoln Gold Cup. In 1822 he renewed his rivalry with Dr Syntax, beating him in both the Lancaster Corporation Gold Cup and the Preston Gold Cup. He had one race in 1823 which resulted in a walk over in the Preston Gold Cup. At stud he was a success, siring the 1831 1000 Guineas winner Galantine (SR 1783) and the Ascot Gold Cup winner Lucetta.

Nine out of 10 Derby winners made the cut into the top 20, with 1826 winner Lapdog missing out. For the first time a filly, Pastille in 1822, won the Oaks and 1000 Guineas. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1830 Derby winner Priam, is placed 73rd on the all-time list up to 2022.

The colt, trained by owner William Chifney at Warren House, Newmarket, had his first race was in the Riddlesworth Stakes at Newmarket on Monday 12th April 1830, which he won by defeating Mahmoud. He then won the Column Stakes and enjoyed a couple of walk-overs before landing the Epsom Derby on Thursday 27th May 1830, beating Little Red Rover and Mahmoud. He then won a Sweepstake before contesting the St Leger, where he was made a strong 11/10 fav but was beaten into second by Birmingham. He finished the season winning a Match and then walked over. The next season he won the Craven Stakes at Newmarket and the Port Stakes, and was sold by William Chifney to Lord Chesterfield, before winning the Goodwood Gold Cup on Thursday 18th August 1831. In his final season he suffered the second defeat of his career in the Craven Stakes, beaten by Colonel Wilson's Chapman, but bounced back to win the King's 100 Guineas Plate at Newmarket, the famous Eclipse Foot at Newmarket, rounding off his career with a second victory in the Goodwood Gold Cup. Priam enjoyed a successful career at stud, predominantly in USA where he went in 1835, but his short career in England produced the 1837 Oaks winner Miss Letty (SR 1876), the 1838 Oaks winner Industry (SR 1907) and the 1840 Oaks, 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas winner Crucifix (SR 2050)

BAY MIDDLETON (SR 2062)
Bay Middleton, a bay colt by Sultan out of Cobweb, was foaled in 1833 for Lord Jersey and always looked likely to develop into a top-class colt. His sire, Sultan, second in the Epsom Derby, was leading sire from 1832 to 1837 inclusive, while his dam, Cobweb, won the 1000 Guineas and Oaks and was named the 'Queen of Racing mares'. Bay Middleton, trained by James 'Tiny' Edwards at Sandpit Lane, Newmarket, was a challenging colt to ride and Jem Robinson, the leading rider, was at first reluctant to take the ride until Lord Jersey persuaded him to do so. His first race, on Monday 4th April 1836, was in the Riddlesworth Stakes over the Abingdon Mile at Newmarket which he won from Emineh and Destiny. He then walked over in the Bruton Street Stakes before winning the 2000 Guineas in the hands of Jem Robinson, defeating Lord Lichfield's Elis and Lord Berners's brother to May-Day. He went straight to the Derby for which he was made 7/4 fav and duly won from Gladiator and Venison. He then won at Ascot and the Grand Duke Michael Stakes at Newmarket, where he beat sole opponent, the St Leger winner Elis, after the pair had scared off 21 opponents from the original entry. He finished his racing career by winning a 300 Guineas Match against Lord Exeter's Muezzin to remain unbeaten, and was sold to Lord George Bentinck for 4000 Guineas in the hope that he would win the 1837 Ascot Gold Cup. Sadly, it was not to be, for he suffered an injury and had to be retired to stud, where he became leading sire in 1844 and 1849. He sired The Flying Dutchman (SR 2099) the 1849 Derby and St Leger winner, The Hermit (SR 1983) 1854 2000 Guineas winner, Andover (SR 2030) 1854 Epsom Derby winner, and Aphrodite (SR 1920) 1851 1000 Guineas winner.

Fifty Classics were run during the decade, and for the first time a horse won the 2000 Guineas and St Leger, namely Sir Tatton Sykes in 1846, who was beaten a neck in the Derby by Pyrrhus The First. It was the decade which saw The Flying Dutchman and Voltigeur, although it was a year later, in 1851 that they took part in the Great Match at York. Just 8 out of 10 Derby winners made the cut into the top 20, with 1846 winner Pyrrhus The First missing out, as did the poor 1845 Derby winner The Merry Monarch. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1849 Derby and St Leger winner The Flying Dutchman, is placed 38th in the all-time list up to 2022.

THE FLYING DUTCHMAN (SR 2099)
The Flying Dutchman, a brown colt by Bay Middleton out of Barbelle foaled in 1846, was bred at Kirkleatham in Yorkshire and was sold to Lord Eglinton for £1000. The Lord had an agreement with the breeder to have first refusal on any foals by Barbelle because he had purchased Van Tromp who had performed so well for Lord Eglinton. The sire, Bay Middleton, was a top-class Derby winner who raced undefeated in just one season on the racecourse before injury forced his retirement. The Flying Dutchman's dam, Barbelle, a 15-hand high mare was by the stallion Sandbeck who regularly produced top Stakes winners. Lord Eglinton sent The Flying Dutchman to be trained by John Fobert at Spigot Lodge, Middleham, so a Northern campaign might have been expected, culminating in the St Leger, but in the end the magnificent horse won at Ascot, Newmarket, Goodwood, York and Doncaster. He began his 2-year-old campaign at Newmarket on Tuesday 4th July 1848 in the July Stakes which he won from Colonel Peel's sister to Iodine. He then won two minor Sweepstakes, one at Newmarket and one at Liverpool, before heading to Doncaster where he landed the Champagne Stakes on Tuesday 12th September 1848, before rounding off the season by winning the Two Year Old Stakes at Doncaster in a canter. He began his 3-year-old career winning the Epsom Derby on Wednesday 23rd May 1849 from Mr Godwin's 50/1 outsider Hotspur and Colonel Peel's Tadmor 2/1 jt fav. He then won the Bickerstaffe Stakes and Post Sweepstakes, both at Liverpool in walk overs before heading off to Doncaster. He won the St Leger on Wednesday 12th September 1849, walked over in the Foal Stakes and a 1000 Guineas Match at Newmarket when Lord Clifden forfeited. He ended that year's campaign winning the Belvoir Stakes at Newmarket. His four-year-old career was spectacular, winning the HM Emperor of Russia Plate at Ascot from Lord Lonsdale's Jericho, following up with a win in a 300 Sovereign Sweepstake at Goodwood over 3 miles, but then just failed to give Derby and St Leger winner Voltigeur 19lbs at York in the Doncaster Cup. He returned in 1851 to gain his revenge on Voltigeur in the Race of the Century, the Great Match at York over 2 miles of the Old Course against Voltigeur, giving him 8 and a half pounds and a length beating. He was then retired to stud, standing at Rawcliffe Paddocks, but in 1858 he was sold to Napoleon's Stud for a reported 150,000 francs. He did not make a great impact at stud, but was the sire of 1856 Derby winner Ellington (SR 1968).

His sire, Melbourne, sired 7 Classic winners, while his dam, Mowerina, finished runner-up to Mendicant in the 1846 1000 Guineas and was a sister to Derby winners Mundig and Cotherstone. He opened his two-year-old campaign on Monday 25th October 1852 in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket where he was beaten into second by Mr Payne's Speed The Plough, but got his revenge 3 days later in the Glasgow Stakes when beating Lord Exeter's Filbert and Speed The Plough. It was a decade which also witnessed 2 Triple Crown winners, namely Lord Lyon in 1866, and the so called 'Avenger of Waterloo', the French horse Gladiateur, in 1865. All 10 Derby winners made the cut, although 1949 Oaks winner Feu De Joie, missed out. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1865 Triple Crown winner Gladiateur, is placed 23rd in the all-time list up to 2022.

GLADIATEUR (SR 2112)
Gladiateur, a brown colt by Monarque out of Miss Gladiator, bred in 1862 by Count Frederic de Lagrange at his Haras de Dangu Stud at Dangu in Upper Normandy, was trained by Tom Jennings senior at Phantom House Stables, Newmarket. He had an unspectacular start to his career, winning the Clearwell Stakes at Newmarket on Tuesday 11th October 1864 before finishing down the field in both the Prendergast Stakes and Criterion Stakes at Headquarters. Despite the indifferent start to his career, Gladiateur bounced back with a vengeance at 3-years-old, winning the 2000 Guineas on Tuesday 2nd May 1865, following up in the Epsom Derby when made the 5/2 favourite, and completed the Triple Crown on Wednesday 13th September 1865 when landing the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster. Arguably his most memorable, most impressive victory was when he returned to his homeland to win the Grand Prix De Paris at Longchamp in front of a crowd in excess of 100,000 where he was crowned the 'Avenger of Waterloo'. There was no shame in his defeat in the 1865 Cambridgeshire when asked to give 52lbs to the winner Gardevisure. At the age of 4 he gained two walk-overs at Newmarket before winning the Ascot Gold Cup from Regalia and Breadalbane. He was sent to stud at Middle Park Stud in Kent before transferring to the Count's own stud in Upper Normandy from whence he had come, but did not make his mark.

GALOPIN (SR 2075)
Galopin, a brown colt by Vedette out of Flying Duchess, was bred in 1872 by William Taylor Sharpe at his stud in Lincolnshire and was sold initially with his mother for just 100 guineas to the Middle Park Stud in Kent, but then sold on as a yearling to Prince Gustavus Batthyany who sent the horse to John Dawson to be trained at his Warren House stables in Newmarket. His sire, Vedette (SR 1963), won the 1857 2000 Guineas as well as the Great Yorkshire Stakes and two Doncaster Cups, while his dam, Flying Duchess, herself had an excellent bloodline by the 1849 Epsom Derby and St Leger winner The Flying Dutchman. Thus, the colt had 1849 Derby winner The Flying Dutchman as his Damsire, and the 1850 Derby winner Voltigeur as his Grandsire, giving him blood from both contestants in the Great Match at York. He began his 2-y-o career at Epsom in the Hyde Park Stakes on Wednesday 29th April 1874, and after a very close race he finished second to Cachmere but was awarded the race in the Stewards room. He then notched up victories on consecutive days at Royal Ascot, firstly in the 5 furlong Fern Hill Stakes, now known as the Sandringham Stakes, followed a day later by a win in the New Stakes, now known as the Norfolk Stakes. He ended the season suffering his only defeat when Plebian beat him in the Middle Park Plate at Newmarket in October. He opened his 3-y-o campaign with victory in a £500 Match at Newmarket, beating a filly Stray Shot, and then went to Epsom to land the Derby as 2/1 fav, beating Claremont and Remorse. He returned to Royal Ascot in June, reverting back to 5 furlongs to win the Fern Hill Stakes for a second time, and then had almost 4 months away from the track before returning to win a valuable Match against Lowlander and then securing the Newmarket Derby to bring an end to a glorious career. He had an exceptional career at stud, siring the mighty St Simon in 1881, but owner Prince Batthyany died in 1883, so he was sold to Henry Chaplin for 8000 Guineas and continued his stud career. He sired 1889 Derby and St Leger winner Donovan (SR 2030), 1895 1000 Guineas winner Galeottia (SR 1939), and 1898 2000 Guineas winner Disraeli (SR 1967).

ORMONDE (SR 2163)
Ormonde, a bay colt by Bend Or out of Lily Agnes, was bred by Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster, in 1883 at his Eaton Stud in Cheshire. His sire was Bend Or, winner of the Epsom Derby and Champion Stakes, while his dam, Lily Agnes, wonf the Doncaster Cup. Ormonde was sent to Kingsclere to be trained by the legendary John Porter, and did not race as a two-year-old until October 1885 when he won the Post Sweepstakes at Newmarket. He notched up 2 more wins in 1885, the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and the Dewhurst Plate. He enjoyed an outstanding year in 1886, winning the Triple Crown and the St James's Palace Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. Towards the end of the season he landed the Great Foal Stakes and Champion Stakes at the prohibitive odds of 1/100. He began his four-year-old campaign winning the Rous Memorial Stakes at Ascot, and sfter winning the Hardwicke Stakes for a second time at Royal Ascot he was transported by train to Waterloo Station before walking to Grosvenor House, Mayfair where he was the star of the celebrations at Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Party from 20th to 21st June 1887. He then took part in one more race, winning the Imperial Gold Cup at Newmarket. He retired to stud, but had fertility problems, although he did sire dual Eclipse Stakes winner Orme.

PERSIMMON (SR 2078)
Persimmon, a black colt by St Simon out of Perdita, bred in 1893 by his owner the Prince of Wales, was sent to be trained by Richard Marsh at Egerton House Stables, Newmarket. Great things were expected of him as his sire, St Simon was undefeated, while his dam, Perdita, also enjoyed success on the racecourse. He made his 2-year-old debut at Royal Ascot on Tuesday 18th June 1895, winning the Coventry Stakes at 2/1 fav ridden by John Watts. He then went to the Glorious Goodwood meeting and won the Richmond Stakes on Tuesday 30th July 1895, landing the odds laid on him of 1/2, easily beating Chamfleurie and His Reverence, despite having to give them 8lbs. His final race of the season on Friday 11th October 1895, he contested the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket and was made 2/1 fav, but could only manage third, behind St Frusquin and Omladina. Persimmon struggled in the early days as a three-year-old, and missed the 2000 Guineas, but went to Epsom with high hopes, although others were preferred in the betting. In the Epsom Derby on Wednesday 3rd June 1896, he won by a neck and 4 lengths from St Frusquin 8/13 fav and Earwig 33/1 in a record time of 2 mins 42 secs. A rematch with his old rival took place on Thursday 2nd July 1896 in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket, but he had to concede 3lbs to St Frusquin and 12lbs to the Duke of Westminster's Regret. In a close run race St Frusquin got the better of Persimmon by half a length, with Regret having to settle for third place. He went on to win his second Classic, the St Leger, on Wednesday 9th September 1896 at the prohibitive odds of 2/11 fav and in his 4-year-old season he remained unbeaten, notching up wins in the Ascot Gold Cup, Eclipse Stakes and Jockey Club Stakes. He retired and was sent off to stud, where he was an undoubted success. He sired the brilliant Sceptre (SR 2078), the only horse to win 4 Classics outright in 1902, the 1906 Oaks winner Keystone II (SR 1927), the 1908 St Leger winner Your Majesty (SR 1972), and 1911 St Leger winner Prince Palatine (SR 2032).

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade and it was a startling decade which saw the filly Sceptre win 4 Classics in 1902, the only time this has been achieved, while Pretty Polly completed the Fillies Triple Crown in 1904. In between Rock Sand won the Triple Crown. Nine of the 10 Derby winners were in the top 20, the exception being the 1908 winner Signorinetta. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1902 Derby winner Ard Patrick, is placed 13th in the all-time list up to 2022.

ARD PATRICK (SR 2154)
Ard Patrick, a brown colt by St Florian out of Morganette, was bred in 1899 by his subsequent owner John Gubbins at Knockany Stud, Bruree, County Limerick. His sire St Florian, was by the brilliant St Simon, while his dam, Morganette, produced the 1897 Triple Crown winner Galtee More. John Gubbins sent Ard Patrick to be trained by Sam Darling at Beckhampton, Wiltshire, although the colt was not ready until the autumn of his two-year-old days when his inaugural race was at Kempton in the Imperial Produce Stakes over 6 furlongs on 12th October 1901. He managed to beat Royal Lancer, who was more experienced and had to carry 3lbs more than Ard Patrick. They met again on 16th October 1901 in the Clearwell Stakes at Newmarket when Ard Patrick prevailed again by a neck. His final outing at 2 was in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket when he ran second to Game Chick and was then put away for the winter. His first outing as a 3-year-old was in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket where he met the brilliant filly Sceptre, who won the Classic from Pistol and Ard Patrick by 2 lengths and 3 lengths. His next outing, a Three-Year-old Plate at Kempton, he was asked to concede 22lbs to Royal Ivy and it was no disgrace to fail by 2 lengths. He then turned out for the Newmarket Stakes on 14th May 1902 and defeated Fowling Piece by a head, only to be disqualified for bumping in the final furlong and was relegated to third behind Fowling Piece and Royal Lancer. However, it was at Epsom in the Derby that he showed his true ability despite the field of 18 including Royal Ivy, Royal Lancer, Fowling Piece and the mighty Sceptre. He won with ease, beating Rising Glass by 3 lengths, with a further 3 lengths back to Friar Tuck, with Sceptre back in fourth. He next turned out at Royal Ascot in the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Tuesday 17th June 1902 and won the race, albeit after Cupbearer finished first passed the post but was disqualified for bumping in the final furlong. He missed the St Leger, which was left to the mercy of Sceptre, and then was asked to give Rising Glass 12lbs in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, but had to settle for third place. He returned as a 4-year-old in the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on 1st July 1903, winning in a canter from Royal Lancer and Cheers, but then the racing world geared up for the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on 17th July 1903 when the field included Sceptre, with 4 Classic wins, Rock Sand, the 1903 Triple Crown winner, and Ard Patrick. Prior to the race Ard Patrick was sold for £21,000 to Count Lehndorff, although he continued to race in the colours of John Gubbins. It was surely the race of the decade, and it was settled in Ard Patrick's favour, beating Sceptre for a second time by a neck, with Rock Sand trailing in their wake some 3 lengths further back. He retired to stud in Germany and sired the German Derby winner Ariel.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, a number labelled as War time Classics, and there were 3 Triple Crown winners, namely Pommern in 1915, Gay Crusader in 1917 and Gainsborough in 1918. Racing historians will have to make up their own mind as to whether it was easier to win a Classic while the war continued. Eight of the 10 Derby winners made the cut, the exceptions being Aboyeur, the 1913 winner, and Spion Kop who won it in 1920. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1918 Triple Crown winner Gainsborough, is placed 24th in the all-time list up to 2022.

GAINSBOROUGH (SR 2112)
Gainsborough, a bay colt by Bayardo out of Rosedrop, was bred in 1915 by her owner Lady James Douglas and was so named after the Lincolnshire town even though she had no direct connection with it. She was born Martha Lucy Hennessy in France in 1854, daughter of Frederick Hennessy, a member of the cognac producing Hennessy family. She married her cousin Richard Hennessy and they had 5 children, but she was widowed in 1885 and married Lord James Douglas, 4th son of the Marquess of Queensberry in 1888. She bought Harewood Stud in 1910 and developed a successful breeding operation. Gainsborough's sire, Bayardo, had also sired the 1917 Triple Crown winner Gay Crusader (SR 2090), while his dam was the 1910 Epsom Oaks winner Rosedrop (SR 1813), so great things were expected of Gainsborough. He was sent to be trained by Alec Taylor junior at Manton in Wiltshire and raced at Newmarket for each of his two-year-old races, finishing 4th in the Thurlow Plate, 3rd in the Ramsey Plate, then won the Autumn Stakes by 2 lengths. As a 3-year-old he was unimpressive in the Severals Stakes at Newmarket, before winning the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket to break 2 records, the first being that he was the first Classic winner to be bred by a lady, and the second was that he was the first Classic winner to carry the colours of a Lady. His jockey, Joe Childs, had been attached to the 4th Hussars during the First World War and donated his share of the winnings to that regiment. He next won the New Derby Stakes, which due to the ongoing War was run at Newmarket, and then took the unusual path, winning the Newmarket Gold Cup, a substitute for the Ascot race, just 2 weeks later before landing the September Stakes, which acted as a substitute for the St Leger, once again because of the War, and by so doing became the 13th winner of the Triple Crown. His final race was in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, finishing second to Prince Chimay who he had already disposed of in the St Leger, retiring thereafter to Harewood Stud, at Woolton Hill, near Newbury, owned by Lady James Douglas. He enjoyed a very successful stud career, crowned as leading sire in both 1932 and 1933, he sired the 1925 St Leger winner Solario (SR 2026), the 1930 St Leger winner Singapore (SR 1924), the 1932 2000 Guineas winner Orwell (SR 1996), and the brilliant 1933 Derby and St Leger winner Hyperion (SR 2248). In 1940 Lady James Douglas sold Harewood Stud to Herbert Blagrave, and Gainsborough died there in 1945 and was buried in the grounds of what was then renamed Gainsborough Stud in his honour.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade between the Wars, although there were no Triple Crown winners, and only 4 horses won more than one Classic, specifically Coronach, Saucy Sue, Manna and Trigo. Eight out of the 10 Derby winners made the cut; those who missed out were Felstead in 1928 and Blenheim in 1930. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1928 St Leger winner Fairway, is placed 17th in the all-time list up to 2022.

FAIRWAY (SR 2125)
Fairway, a dark brown colt by Phalaris out of Scapa Flow, was foaled in 1925 by his owner Lord Derby and sent to be trained at Stanley House (now Godolphin) by George Lambton, and thereafter by Frank Butters. His sire, Phalaris, was a brilliant sprinter, while his dam, Scapa Flow, produced the 1930 1000 Guineas winner Fair Isle (SR 1893), so the future looked bright for Fairway. He began his 2-year-old career in the Eglinton Stakes at York where he was unplaced behind Grandmaster, but then took the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the July Stakes at Newmarket and the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, raising hopes of Classic success in 1928. However, he had to be withdrawn from the 2000 Guineas due to a mouth abscess, but bounced back in the Newmarket Stakes on Wednesday 16th May 1928. Although he went to Epsom with some confidence and was made the 3/1 fav, he finished a disappointing 9th behind surprise winner Felstead 33/1. Once again, he bounced back with victory in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown where he defeated Royal Minstrel and Book Law, and then landed his sole Classic, the St Leger on Wednesday 12th September 1928. He rose to new heights on Tuesday 16th October 1928 when he won the Champion Stakes and all looked well for a promising 4-year-old career. He launched the next years campaign by winning the Burwell Stakes at Newmarket, following up in the Rous Memorial Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket, but then disappointed in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown when only second behind Royal Minstrel. Yet again, he bounced back with victories in the Champion Stakes and Jockey Club Cup, where he cantered to a 3 length victory, and it was made known that his target at five was the Ascot Gold Cup. Sadly, it was not to be, as he sustained an injury and was sent off to Woodlands Stud in Newmarket. He had a highly successful stud career siring 1936 2000 Guineas winner Pay Up (SR 1968), 1936 1000 Guineas winner Tide-Way (SR 1825), 1939 dual Classic winner Blue Peter (SR 2089), 1942 Derby winner Watling Street (SR 2002), 1943 2000 Guineas winner Kingsway (SR 1926) and 1944 2000 Guineas winner Garden Path (SR 1908).

Ins and outs
Forty-nine Classics were run during the decade leading up to the Second World War, with no St Leger, for the first and only time, in 1939, probably denying Blue Peter a Triple Crown. Bahram landed the Triple Crown in 1935, and a number of horses won two Classics, although a few inferior horses crept into the top 20. All 10 Derby winners made the cut. The highest rated horse in the decade, the brilliant 1933 Derby and St Leger winner Hyperion, is placed 3rd in the all-time list up to 2022.

HYPERION (SR 2248)
Hyperion, a chestnut colt by Gainsborough out of Selene, was bred in 1930 by Edward Stanley, the 17th Earl of Derby on 18th April 1930 at his Side Hill Stud in Newmarket, and was sent to be trained by George Lambton at Stanley House stables (now Godolphin) at Newmarket. His sire Gainsborough was the 1918 Triple Crown winner, while his dam Selene was by Chaucer, a son of the brilliant St Simon. Hyperion won the New Stakes (now known as the Norfolk Stakes) at Royal Ascot, dead-heated in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood and won the Dewhurst Stakes. He went into the winter of his 2-year-old days as a fancy for Classic success the next year and won all his four races in 1933. He began with victory in the Chester Vase before landing the Epsom Derby. He returned to Royal Ascot to win the Prince of Wales Stakes, and then secured a second Classic win in the St Leger. He began his 4-year-old campaign by winning the March Stakes at Newmarket and the Burwell Handicap Stakes, but failed to stay in the Ascot Gold Cup. In his final outing, the Dullingham Stakes at Newmarket, he was asked to concede 29lbs to sole opponent, the 3-year-old Caithness, failing by a short head to give away the weight. Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, which included the later years of the Second World War, with a number of them not staged on their usual racecourse. Sun Chariot won the Fillies Triple Crown in 1942, and Timeform was launched after Phil Bull witnessed the outstanding performance of Tudor Minstrel in the 1947 2000 Guineas. For the first time ever all of the top 20 had ratings of 2000 or above, although only 9 of the 10 Derby winners made the cut, the exception being the 1946 winner Airborne. The highest rated horse in the decade, the brilliant 1947 2000 Guineas winner Tudor Minstrel, is placed 5th in the all-time list up to 2022.

TUDOR MINSTREL (SR 2232)
Tudor Minstrel, a brown colt by Owen Tudor out of Sansonnet, was bred in 1944 by his owner John Arthur Dewar, who inherited his horses from Thomas Dewar, his uncle, the Scotch whisky magnate. His sire Owen Tudor won the 1941 Derby, while his dam Sansonnet produced the Coronation Stakes winner Neolight. He was sent to Beckhampton to be trained by Fred Darling, who gave him a couple of easy outings at Bath and Salisbury before winning the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He then rounded off his season with victory in the National Breeders Produce Stakes at Sandown on Saturday 20th July 1946, beating Kingsclere and Benane. He began his 3-year-old career again at Bath, winning the Somerset Stakes before landing the 2000 Guineas from Saravan and Sayajirao. He was made a strong 4/7 favourite for the Derby but failed to stay and was beaten into fourth by Pearl Diver, Migoli and Sayajirao, but then bounced back to form to win the St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting. He was beaten by Migoli in the Eclipse, but won the prestigious Knight's Royal Stakes at Ascot, now known as the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He retired to stud where he was a success, siring Tomy Lee, winner of the 1959 Kentucky Derby.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade which saw the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, although she had to witness her own horse Aureole being defeated by 4 lengths in the 1953 by Pinza ridden by Gordon Richards. There was a Fillies Triple Crown winner, Meld in 1955, although there were some high-class horses, with a rating above 2025 needed to earn a place in the top 20. Nine of the 10 Derby winners made the cut, the exception being the 1956 winner Lavandin. The highest rated horse in the decade, the 1953 Derby winner Pinza, is placed 16th in the all-time list up to 2022.

PINZA (SR 2131)
Pinza, a bay colt by Chanteur out of Pasqua, was bred in 1950 after Mrs H E Morriss had arranged the mating between Chanteur and Pasqua and then sent Pasqua to the Newmarket December sales in 1949 whilst in foal. The Beckhampton trainer Fred Darling purchased the mare for 2000 guineas and the foal was born at Darling's, although he did not like the mare and later sold her on. Pinza was sold as a yearling to Sir Victor Sassoon, who had just seen the opera singer Ezio Pinza perform in South Pacific and named the foal Pinza. His sire Chanteur won the Coronation Cup and was placed in the Prix De L'Arc de Triomphe, although the dam, Pasqua, was unspectacular. Sir Victor Sassoon sent Pinza to be trained by Norman Bertie at Bedford House stables in Newmarket, and Bertie sent Pinza to Hurst Park on Friday 25th July 1952 to contest the Greensleeves Stakes, but was unplaced behind Stan. In his next race, the Tattersall Sale Stakes at Doncaster, Pinza beat Smoke Signal and Prince Christian and was then aimed at the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot. However, Neemah easily defeated Pinza that day, although Pinza bounced back to win the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. He sustained an injury which prevented him from contesting the 2000 Guineas, but he made his seasonal debut on Wednesday 13th May 1953 in the Newmarket Stakes which he won with ease. He was made joint 5/1 fav in a very open looking Epsom Derby, just after the Queen had been crowned and went to Epsom with a realistic chance of winning the Derby with Aureole. However, Sir Gordon Richards spoilt her party when Pinza strode away from Aureole and Pink Horse to win the Derby in impressive fashion. After winning the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Pinza sustained another injury which prevented him from contesting the St Leger, and he was sent straight to stud. His stud career was unspectacular and he did not sire any Classic winners.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, when Nijinsky became the most recent Triple Crown winner in 1970. Just 7 of the 10 Derby winners made the cut; those missing out were the 1962 winner Larkspur, the 1966 winner Charlottown and the 1969 winner Blakeney. The highest rated horse in the decade, the mighty French 1965 Epsom Derby winner Sea Bird II, is placed 2nd in the all-time list up to 2022.

SEA BIRD II (SR 2249)
Sea Bird II, a chestnut colt by Dan Cupid out of Sicalade, was bred in 1962 in France at the stud of his textile manufacturer Jean Ternynck based in Lille. His sire Dan Cupid, was runner-up in the French Derby when trained by Etienne Pollet, while his dam, Sicalade, had a limited racing career, dead-heating in one race and not racing beyond 2-years old. Sea Bird II was sent to be trained by Etienne Pollet, like his father, and began his racing career with victories in the Prix de Blaison at Chantilly and the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte, winning the first by a short neck and the second by a neck. He was then sent to contest the Grand Criterium, suffering his only career defeat at the hands of the more experienced stablemate Grey Dawn, and was then put away for the winter. Sea Bird II began his three-year-old career winning the Prix Greffulhe before appearing in the Prix Lupin which he won impressively by 6 lengths from Diatome. He then travelled to England to contest the Epsom Derby, which he won with considerable ease from Meadow Court and I Say. Meadow Court later showed the strength of that form by landing the Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Sea Bird II next contested the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, beating Couroucou by two lengths while easing down, and hopes were high that the French could have a home bred winner of their biggest race. The Prix De L'Arc de Triomphe had a particularly strong field in 1965, featuring Meadow Court, the Irish Derby winner, Reliance, the French Derby winner, Anilin, the Russian Derby winner, Blabla, the winner of the Prix de Diane, and the USA sent the Preakness winner Tom Rolfe to join the contest. However, Sea Bird II won with considerable ease by four and a half lengths from Reliance, with 6 lengths back to Diatome. Jean Ternynck retired Sea Bird II after the Arc and leased the stallion to the American John W Galbreath for $1.35 million where he stood for 5 years at Galbreath's Darby Dan Farm Stud.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, and it was a decade to celebrate the fierce competition between Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef for supremacy. It was also the decade which saw the ‘Race of the Century’ between Grundy and Bustino. Just 7 of the 10 Derby winners made the cut; those missing out were the 1973 winner Morston, the surprise 1974 winner Snow Knight, and the 1976 winner Empery. The highest rated horse in the decade, the legendary 1971 2000 Guineas winner Brigadier Gerard, is placed 4th in the all-time list up to 2022.

BRIGADIER GERARD (SR 2233)
Brigadier Gerard, a bay colt by Queens Hussar out of La Paiva, was foaled on 5th March 1968 by John Hislop and was sent to be trained by Dick Hern in West Ilsley. His sire, Queens Hussar, winner of both the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, while his dam was the unraced La Paiva who was a daughter of Prince Chevalier. His inaugural race was on 24th June 1970 in the Berkshire Stakes at Newbury when, although unfancied, he still managed to win by 5 lengths at the rewarding odds of 100/7, and followed up in the Champagne Stakes at Salisbury, winning by 4 lengths at 8/13 fav. He then landed the Washington Singer Stakes back at Newbury and was clearly ready for more demanding targets, so contested the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket when pitched against stern opposition, including Mummy's Pet and Swing Easy. Although the more experienced Mummy's Pet and Swing Easy were higher in the betting at 5/6 fav and 9/4 respectively, Brigadier Gerard was sent off at 11/2 and won by an eased down 3 lengths from Mummy's Pet, with Swing Easy in third. After winning all 4 of his juvenile races the Brigadier went into the winter strongly fancied for Classic success in 1971. He went straight to the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, and despite there being only 6 runners it was a high-class field which included My Swallow and Mill Reef, the other 2 colts who had headed the Free Handicap alongside Brigadier Gerard. Surprisingly, the Brigadier was offered at 11/2 against his more fancied rivals, Mill Reef 6/4 fav and My Swallow 2/1, but he strode away with the race by a comfortable 3 lengths from Mill Reef, with My Swallow back in third. He avoided the Derby, believing that a mile and a half would stretch his stamina, but showed how brilliant he was up to a mile and 2 furlongs by notching up consecutive wins in the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot, the Sussex Stakes and Goodwood Mile and the end of season Champions Stakes. He returned at 4 to record victories in the Lockinge Stakes and Westbury Stakes at Newbury and Sandown respectively, the Prince of Wales's Stakes, the Eclipse Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. However, with the ground and distance against him at York, he contested the inaugural running of the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, but was defeated by an inspired ride by Braulio Baeza aboard Roberto to inflict the one and only defeat on the Brigadier. He still showed his well-being by landing the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and a second Champions Stakes at Newmarket. After a career in which he won 17 of his 18 races, the Brigadier was retired to Egerton Stud on the outskirts of Newmarket before being moved to his owner's East Woodhay Stud near Newbury. He was not a great success at Stud, but did sire the 1980 St Leger winner Light Cavalry (SR 1932).

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, and it was a decade which saw the ill-fated Shergar and the unlucky Derby runner-up Dancing Brave. It was also the period when Oh So Sharp won the Fillies Triple crown in 1985. Just 7 of the 10 Derby winners made the cut; those missing out were the 1984 surprise winner Secreto, the 1988 winner Kahyasi, and the 1990 winner Quest For Fame. The highest rated horse in the decade, the later kidnapped 1981 Derby winner Shergar, is placed 9th in the all-time list up to 2022.

SHERGAR (SR 2169)
Shergar, a bay colt with white blaze, 4 white socks and a blue eye, by Great Nephew out of Sharmeen, was foaled on 3rd March 1978 at Sheshoon, near The Curragh in County Kildare at the stud of HH Aga Khan. His sire, Great Nephew, won the 1967 Prix Dollar and Prix du Moulin, while his dam Sharmeen was a seventh-generation descendant of the mighty Mumtaz Mahal. The Aga Khan had links with a large number of stables in France, Ireland and England, but he chose to send Shergar to by trained at Freemason Lodge, Newmarket by Michael Stoute (later Sir Michael Stoute). He began his two-year-old campaign on 19th September 1980 in the Kris Plate at Newbury when partnered by Lester Piggott. He was made 11/8 fav and won by over 2 lengths, and was thought experienced enough to contest the William Hill Futurity Stakes at Doncaster on 25th October 1980. He was again ridden by Lester Piggott and was sent off at 5/2, but had to give way to Beldale Flutter by two and a half lengths and was put away for the winter. The 2000 Guineas was not considered, as the principal target was the Derby, and Shergar was sent to Sandown Park on 25th April 1981 to contest the Guardian Classic Trial which he won with considerable ease, pulling up but still winning by 10 lengths. He was then sent to Chester to negotiate the tricky bends and tight track at Chester in the Chester Vase on 5th May 1981, but he just blew the opposition away, winning by 12 lengths and all roads led to Epsom. In the Derby he was partnered by the youthful Walter Swinburn and was made the 10/11 favourite, but when he took the lead rounding Tattenham Corner it was obvious that he would win. The words of the commentator Peter Bromley eloquently summed up his superiority, 'there's only one horse in it, and you need a telescope to see the rest'. He won by 10 lengths and was so far ahead that the rider of the second horse, John Matthias on Glint of Gold, thought that he had won because he hadn't realised that Shergar had already passed the winning post. His next engagement was the Irish Derby on 27th June 1981, and Walter Swinburn had to be replaced by Lester Piggott, as he was suspended. Yet again he won so easily that the Irish commentator Michael O'Hehir said, 'He's winning so easily that it's Shergar first and the rest nowhere'. He enjoyed a much deserved break of about 4 weeks until his next engagement, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot, which he won by a comfortable 4 lengths, and the team had a difficult decision to make, either running him in the hustle and bustle of the Arc or the St Leger, when he might not stay the distance. They chose the St Leger at Doncaster on 12th September 1981 with Walter Swinburn back in the saddle. Unfortunately, the ground was soft, making staying even more of an issue, and when Swinburn had him poised to make his challenge, the usual acceleration was not there and he was beaten over 10 lengths in fourth behind Cut Above. After his extremely successful campaign in 1981 Shergar was retired to stud at Ballymany Stud in County Kildare from whence he had come. He had already been syndicated by HH Aga Khan after his Epsom Derby win. He had sold 40 shares in the stallion at a quarter of a million pounds per share, so had raised 10 million, and all was set for a glittering stud career. However, as has been widely reported, in 1983 he was stolen from his stud and a ransom demand was made but not paid. The IRA had allegedly stolen the horse, but nothing was confirmed, and the racing world lost a potentially brilliant stallion.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, and a number of horses crept into the top 20 which, in previous decades, would not have done so. Nine of the 10 Derby winners made the cut, with 1999 winner Oath being the only one to miss out. The highest rated horse in the decade, 1991 Derby winner Generous, is placed 14th in the all-time list up to 2022.

GENEROUS (SR 2153)
Generous, a chestnut colt by Caerleon out of Doff the Derby, was foaled on 8th February 1988 at Barronstown Stud in County Wicklow, Ireland and was sold as a foal to bloodstock agent Hamish Alexander for 80,000 Irish guineas. His sire, Caerleon, won the Prix du Jockey Club and Benson & Hedges Gold Cup at York, while his dam, Doff the Derby, was a daughter of Preakness Stakes winner Master Derby. He was sold on by Alexander at the Goff's Sales to Prince Fahd Salman for 200,000 Irish Guineas and was sent to be trained by Paul Cole at Whatcombe in Oxfordshire. For his first race he was sent to Ascot where he won the Garter Graduation Stakes, and was then runner-up to Mac's Imp in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. He contested the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and was aimed high in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville, finishing a disappointing tenth to Hector Protector. He won a confidence boosting Reference Point Stakes at Sandown and then became noticed by all when landing the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket at the rewarding odds of 50/1, before being put away for the winter. He returned in the 2000 Guineas, finishing a close up fourth behind Mystiko, before winning the Epsom Derby at 9/1, and confirmed that form when winning the Irish Derby 25 days later. He was made the odds on 4/6 fav in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot, and duly landed the odds from Sanglamore and Rock Hooper, and on the back of that success was made 9/10 fav for the Arc. However, it was a rough race and he did not handle the conditions well, finishing a disappointing eighth behind a horse he had previously beaten, Suave Dancer. He retired at the end of the 1991 season and was sent to Prince Fahd Salman's Banstead Manor Stud. In 1996 he was moved to Japan and in 1999 to New Zealand. Although he did not sire any Classic winners, he did sire Catella, winner of the Group 1 Grosser Erdgas-Preis in Germany.

Ins and outs
Fifty Classics were run during the decade, and a number of horses crept into the top 20 with low ratings. Eight of the 10 Derby winners made the cut, the exceptions being the 2003 winner Kris Kin, and the 2004 winner North Light. The highest rated horse in the decade, the exceptional 2009 Derby and 2000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars, is placed 8th in the all-time list up to 2022.

SEA THE STARS (SR 2170)
Sea The Stars, a bay colt by Cape Cross out of Urban Sea, was foaled on 6th April 2006 by Sunderland Holdings Ltd at the Tsui family Stud. He was sent to be trained by John Oxx who started the colt off in the Jebel Ali EBF Maiden Stakes at The Curragh on Sunday 13th July 2008 when he was a respectable fourth behind Driving Snow and Black Bear Island. His next race, and first win, was on Sunday 17th August 2008 in the Korean Racing Authority EBF Maiden at Leopardstown, and then he ended the season landing the Group 2 Juddmonte Befesford Stakes at The Curragh. He was sent to England to contest the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday 2nd May 2009, beating Delegator and Gan Amhras, and went straight to Epsom where he won the Derby in impressive fashion, defeating Fame and Glory and Masterofthehorse. In the Eclipse Stakes he saw off Rip Van Winkle, and then went to York to land the Juddmonte International at the prohibitive odds of 4/1 on. He returned to his native Ireland to win the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday 5th September 2009, and a month later he won the Arc with ease from Youmzain and Cavalryman. After his brilliant win in the Arc, Sea The Stars was sent to stud on 27th October 2009, standing at HH Aga Khan's Giltown Stud in Ireland. He sired the 2014 Epsom Oaks winner Taghrooda (SR 1850) and the 2014 German Derby winner Sea The Moon.

Ins and outs
Sixty Classics were run between 2011 and the year of publication, 2022, and it was a period which witnessed the highest rated horse ever, Frankel. Just 7 of the 12 Derby winners made the cut, the exceptions being the 2011 winner Pour Moi, the 2016 winner Harzand, the 2017 winner Wings of Eagles, the 2018 winner Masar, and the 2019 winner Anthony Van Dyck. The highest rated horse in the decade, the brilliant 2011 2000 Guineas winner Frankel, is placed 1st in the all-time list up to 2022.

FRANKEL (SR 2280)
Frankel, a bay colt, with a large white star and four white feet, by Galileo out of Kind, was foaled on 11th February 2008 at Banstead Manor Stud at Cheveley, owned by Juddmonte and the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, and was named after the legendary American racehorse trainer Bobby Frankel. His sire, Galileo, won the 2001 Epsom Derby, while his dam, Kind, is a half-sister to Powerscourt who won the Arlington Million. Frankel was sent to be trained at Warren Lodge, Newmarket by Sir Henry Cecil. His inaugural race, the EBF Maiden Stakes at Newmarket on Friday 13th August 2010 saw him pitched against Nathaniel, who also became a top-class horse and would later become part of Frankel's final chapter, but Frankel proved himself to be superior. He was next sent to contest the Frank Whittle Stakes at Doncaster on Friday 10th September 2010 where he defeated Rainbow Springs and Diamond Geezah, and was then aimed at the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot, which he won with authority from Klammer and Treasure Beach. His final race in 2010 was in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, which he won comfortably from Roderic O'Connor and Glor Na Mara. His Guineas prep race was the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, where he comfortably landed odds of 4/1 on, defeating Excelebration, who was to become one of his regular opponents. In the 2000 Guineas at Headquarters on Saturday 30th April 2011 he just blew the opposition away, leading from starting gate to winning post, announcing that he was something special. He did not contest the Derby, fearing that a mile and a half would stretch his stamina to the limits, but won the St James's Palace Stakes at the Royal meeting, the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes back at Ascot. The brave decision was made to keep the unbeaten colt in training for a 4-year-old campaign which he began by winning the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. His legendary trainer, Sir Henry Cecil, was desperately ill, but Frankel seemed to give him renewed energy and the will to live, and Sir Henry must have been so proud when landing the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, a second Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and then went to York to contest the International Stakes. It seemed like a final hurrah for Sir Henry Cecil, who looked so frail yet so overjoyed to witness his star defeat Farhh and St Nicholas Abbey, yet there was still one more chapter to write. The crowning moment came on his return to Ascot on Saturday 20th October 2012 in the Champion Stakes, which he won from Cirrus des Aigles and Nathaniel, the horse which he had beaten in his first race some 769 days beforehand. He had a faultless career, winning all 14 races at all of the top English tracks, Ascot, York, Goodwood, Doncaster, Newmarket and Newbury, with almost every racing columnist and racing historian recognising him as the greatest racehorse who has ever graced these shores. He retired to stud at Banstead Manor where he was born, and has sired 2019 Epsom Oaks winner Anapurna (SR 1836), 2019 St Leger winner Logician (SR 2063), 2021 Epsom Derby winner Adayar (SR 1989), 2021 Irish Derby and St Leger winner Hurricane Lane (SR 1994) and Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe winner Alpinista (SR 1988).
